Zhang Yin Space

Zhang Yins space is also based on expansive, but a much more passive expansion than Jobs. Originally starting with a + shaped plan, the rooms are built off in all directions. This creates an almost Eisenmann-esque intesection of some walls on some areas, as well as some awkwardly shaped passages.

The design is deliberately open and natural. The lighting is mainly from natural sources, filtered by the chinese lattice, and the centre of teh building, where Zhang Yin would do her work from is completely open to the natural light and air.

The building is surrounded and supported by boxes which have been applied with a subtle texture, and the whole thing is suspended from the datum by thin wires, emphasising the light, unobtrusive nature of the building.

Jobs Space

The concept of power explored in this space is expansion. Contrary to Zhang Yins space it is expansion though force, the building expands and faces its way through the solid rock until it almost dominates it. Each of the penetrating arms represents the different areas of expansion within Jobs empire, movies, music, mobile phones etc, and at the end of each area is a glass viewing room where Jobs is able to view his expanding empire.

The centre of the building is Jobs' desk where he sits and does his work, it is isloated and remote to symbolise how Jobs has alienated people through his domination. A series of platforms and lifts rise from the floor to allow Jobs to access all areas of his building, and his lift to the meeting space appears as part of the balcony until approached.

The geometry is deliberately rounded to draw reference to a similar aesthetic in Apple technology.

Meeting Space

I was exploreing the concept of balance of power with the meeting space. The platform is laid out like a chess board refereing to both balance of power as well as the gender difference between Jobs and Zhang Yin, who in this analogy woould be the King and Queen. I have also restricted the movement between the two sapces by removing sections of the floor. This means that neither can invade the others space without the real risk of falling through the ground.

The dining table also explores concepts of blance, using a cantilver design inspired by Calatrava. The spiral stairs lead up and down, giving a sense of ascent and decent from their respective offices to a neutral, blanced plane. But on return they simply have to wait at the top of each stair and the lift will come to pick them up. I wanted the area to be very open to symbolise the openness of the shareing of ideas in the business meeting, but also have an elemet of security, which is why i have included the shade device. It gives the sense of enclosure, but also as if it is reaching out and expanding, which is the concept behind both Jobs and Zhang Yins spaces.

Concept Sketches

Some of my initial concept sketches for the design. It moves from a concentric circle design to a more orthogonal, rounded corner design. There are also concept sketches for the dining table.
